Cool by Design

When it comes to using your laptop, heat generation and increased performance are in a cyclical relationship that feed off of one another. Processors generate heat that can spin up internal fans, stress systems, degrade hardware and throttle processors. This is the basic problem all laptop users face, the more you want to do with your laptop, the harder it works, and the hotter and slower it gets.

  • Silent Heatsink Cooling

The DHCR’s thermally conductive heatsink creates the ultimate silent high-performance workstation for the latest Apple laptops. An extra-large coupling plate extracts heat from the laptop through a special assembly of low-thermal impedance materials or direct metal-to-metal contact for unrestricted conductive heat transfer. Sculpted from solid aluminum with cooling fins that run continuously from top-to-bottom and front-to-back to create a thermally massive heatsink with improved heat flow. Heat absorbed within the heatsink transfers to surrounding air through numerous air channels carved deep into the heatsink to increase cooling surface area for improved heat transfer. Interconnected air channels and thru-holes improve natural passive airflows.

  • Active Airflow Cooling

The DHCR’s heatsink design facilitates accelerated active airflow cooling when used with the Fx Cooling Fan accessory. The Fx boosts heatsink cooling, flushes out more hot air, and drives cooling airflow into the 2021+ MacBook Pro’s center intake vent for direct internal processor cooling. The DHCR and Fx utilize a separated fan design instead of a built-in fan design as this allows the separated fan to be positioned outside of a constraining enclosure for more efficient operation, which allows the fan to generate more airflow with less noise. The separated fan design also allows the heatsink to be as large as possible for maximum thermal mass and surface area, which leads to increased heatsink cooling capacity.

Setup for Cool

Running a laptop in clamshell mode with the screen closed and connected to external monitor, keyboard/mouse and power supply offers compelling benefits, such as a more compact and ergonomic desktop workstation, reduced wear on the laptop’s built-in components and improved external display performance, however, clamshell mode also traps heat, resulting in a greater need for supplemental cooling.

  • Current Laptop Optimization

The DHCR uses an integrative design approach to help the 2021+ MacBook Pro’s built-in cooling system run more efficiently and achieve peak performance potential. The DHCR’s heatsink is positioned at the laptop processor location to extract more heat directly from the heat source. The overall support cradle width, the heatsink coupling plate width, and the air channel locations match the laptop’s processor and built-in cooling system layout. The heatsink’s numerous vertical cooling fin air channels extend through the heatsink mass to become thru-holes that guide cooling airflow into a horizontal air channel with curving ends to flush out hot exhaust air from the laptop. The front horizontal channel uses a smaller size to concentrate airflow along the laptop’s bottom screen-hinge edge, while numerous thru-hole air channels extend below the laptop’s center intake vent, with the ends of the air channels angle up to guide cooling airflow into the laptop vent.

  • Innovative Clamshell Setup

The DHCR has been optimized for the 2021+ MacBook Pro, 2022+ MacBook Air and future flat-backed Mac laptops, while a leaning support works with with all current and prior Apple/Mac laptops of the last decade and most PC laptops with metal enclosures. An innovative leaning support provides an easy clamshell setup by allowing a user to open the laptop’s lid and access the power button while the laptop sits safely within the padded cradle and connected to external monitor cables. Edge bumper pads wrap around all four sides of the thermally conductive interface to protect the laptop from edge and corner impact during setup. A user installed laptop retention pad locks the laptop in place for improved thermal coupling (extra pads included for future setups). The heavy heatsink mass and non-slip pads provide a stable non-tip support for larger and heavier laptops, such as the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Objects of Substance

SVALT is a mission driven company offering products that are as much art as tech, and as much objects of substance as machines engineered for performance. Made locally in the Pacific Northwest with a focus on sustainability and enduring metal construction, all SVALT products use modular bolted/snapped cooling system assemblies and ship with the tools required for right-to-repair servicing, exchanging, upgrading and extending product life span.
